Even before you start packing, make sure to check the travel arrangements and what kind of luggage you’ll be allowed to bring. To minimize problems, try to fit everything into the allowed weight and size (especially if you’re bringing your display board with you).

For Your Project

  • Display board
    • If you’re sending it ahead, make sure to have copies of the packaging company’s phone numbers and the tracking number of your project so you know who to call if it isn’t there.
    • If you’re bringing it with you, take all the things you used to pack it: scissors, garbage bags / packaging wrap, duct tape (you’re going to need them to re-pack your display board).
    • If you’re renting a board on site, make sure that your project can be adaptable for different sizes of boards
  • The Science Fair Toolbox
  • Any physical displays for your project, packed well if they’re fragile
  • Backpack to carry everything from your room to the exhibit hall
  • Some of the more important books you used for research so you can bring up specific passages from your research as reference

Clothes and Personal Items

  • Formal clothes and shoes for judging
  • Lounge clothes and/or PJs to hang out with your roommates
  • Comfy shoes for walking tours
  • A week’s worth of clothes
  • Toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, mouthwash, soap, hairbrush, razor and shaving cream
  • Deodorant!
  • Shampoo, conditioner, towel
  • First-Aid Kit: painkiller, a cold medicine if you’re susceptible to colds, pepto bismol, band aids, gravol, any medicine you use on a regular basis

Electronics

  • Camera (or even video camera) and extra batteries or a battery charger
  • Some music-playing device, with headphones so you don’t bother your neighbour
  • Alarm Clock
  • Extension cords

Just for fun

  • Playing cards
  • Pins for trading
  • A good book (or something else to keep you occupied if you’re nervous and have nothing to keep you occupied)

Things that might come in useful

  • Flashlight
  • Combination lock
  • Nightlight
  • Slippers to walk around in the lounge
  • Umbrella
  • Phone card to call your family
  • Hairdryer
  • Sunscreen
  • Sleeping Bag: check with the participant guide what kind of sleeping arrangements will be provided, and pack accordingly
  • Notepad for writing: contact info of people you want to keep in touch with, ideas you get from people form the fair, tick-tac-toe games, etc.
