Stepping Up Guide

How you present yourself in front of the judges can make a huge impact. You never get a second chance to make a first impression. It can reeeally make a difference. Try to make your image show the confidence you have in yourself and the belief that you have done an awesome science fair project!

It's quite simple, just look professional.

Dress for Success

It's like Night at the Roxbury, but we're at a Science Fair. And cooler!

  • Anytime you would like to make a good impression, dress up! Wear a sophisticated outfit. This means no t-shirts and jeans! Pack dress pants, nice shirts, blazers, skirts, ties, and suits. On judging day, girls should wear dress pants or a skirt with a nice shirt. Boys should go for dress pants, shirt, and tie.
  • Science fairs mean being in a large building with sometimes over 2000 people at a time. Since air conditioning and heating can change, it is a good idea to bring a something warm. Bring a blazer, nice sweater or jacket. Make sure it goes with your outfit and you still look professional.
  • Wear comfortable shoes during judging. Judging usually lasts at least a full day. Given the tight schedule, you may be standing for a large part of the day. However, this does not mean that you should wear running shoes. Wear shoes you can stand in for a few hours. Three inch stiletto heels are definitely out of the question.
  • Professional clothes can look horrible if they are not pressed. Your outfit should be clean, pressed and free of odors on the day of judging.
  • Remember to polish your shoes.
  • Although it is fine to jewelry and make-up at the science fair, it is important to maintain a balance. Jewelry and make-up should be tasteful and not excessive. Avoid any "funky" jewelry and striking colors. Earrings are fine, but any other body piercings should be removed.
  • Dressing professional is not only important for judging. Remember to dress appropriately for banquets and award ceremonies throughout the week. Many times, girls will wear dress pants or skirts with a nice shirt, or a dress. Boys usually wear dress pants and a shirt.

Looking Neat and Tidy

  • Remember to shower before judging day and use deodorant.
  • Your hair should be washed and styled neatly. Stick with something that can survive the entire day and is quick to put together. In some cases, you may only have a bit of time to get ready.
  • Make sure your nails are clean and neatly trimmed. If you decide to wear nail polish, avoid striking colors like bright red, black, hot pink etc.
  • Keep perfume and cologne to a minimum.
  • Brush your teeth so your breath smells fresh.
