The Canada Wide Science Fair is the largest science related extracurricular activity in Canada. Each year, 450 students are chosen from 25,000 competitors at regional fairs to compete at this prestigious event. Each year, the fair is held in a different city. Participants compete in seven divisions and three age categories for medals and prizes worth over $360,000. For more information, take a look at the YSF website.

What to Expect

Getting there: Most of the time, students will meet with their delegate(s) and travel to CWSF together from their respective locations. Project boards are available at the fair so most students simply bring their posters to stick onto their board.

Accommodations: Since the CWSF is usually held at a university campus, you will probably share a dorm room. Your roommates will be from all across Canada.

Food: Food is provided to all students at the fair. While most meals will be at the university campus, some meals are eaten out at restaurants, and at banquets.

Setting up your project: If you have already requested a project board at the fair, all you need to bring with you is your poster and a LOT of double-sided tape. You will be given a chance to setup your board during the following afternoon.

Judgment day: This is your chance to showcase all the work you have been doing for the past several months. Remember to dress formal for the judging. It is important that you look professional. Remember that the number of judges you get is not always indicative of what award you will get.

Having fun! The CWSF is not all science. During the week, you will have a chance to take a tour with a group of other students, attend socials, go to banquets, visit attractions and meet lots of new people. Remember to bring some pins to trade! Image:CWSF.jpg
