Hi Everyone!

  • Name: Katherine Taneille Johnson. (I prefer my middle name)
  • Education: I'm currently in Grade 11 at North Peace Senior Secondary, Fort St John, British Columbia. I have a passion for science (mainly in biology and chemistry) and in addition, also for teaching.
  • Languages: English, and Music Notation (Currently working on my French)
  • Little Known Fact: I can play four different instruments: piano, clarinet, violin, and oboe. Throughout the past ten years, I have taken many, many piano lessons, and many violin lessons. I think I have some skill. :) I enjoy playing in concert bands, because of the variety and depth of music that we encounter. In addition to this... I always seem to wind-up being seated in the front row with the flutes (thank you, oboe- although a situation not always necessarily wanted)
  • Sports: For the past eleven years I have journeyed with the local speed skating club to a variety of different national and provincial wide competitions. The fastest that I could skate 500 M in (see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Long_track_speed_skating) was approx. 45 seconds. Long track is definitely the best way to go. :) I also enjoy skiing (classic, skate, and downhill) along with badminton.
  • I enjoy hiking and other outdoor activities- especially kayaking and camping.
  • I wish to travel, and see some of the sights that make this planet awesome and amazing. So far, I have only been blessed to have been outside of Canada once- for a music/ band trip to New York City. Science Fair is a great way to travel the country.
  • I was a CWSF finalist and medalist for:
    2005, 2007, 2008, 2009
    Biotechnology and Pharmaceutical Sciences
Been participating in science fairs for 8 years now :)
  • I am current a member of Team Canada for the 2009 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair with my project on telomerase (an enzyme- google it! :D) My project falls into the Molecular Biology category.
  • I am actively involved in SMARTS (I'm the BC Provincial Coordinator) and I'm a member of the Youth Advisory Group for the Canadian Commission to UNESCO.
  • One of my side interests lies in elementary science education. I am helping start up a new program in Northern British Columbia that is meant to increase science interest in elementary students (Currently, I am a principle instructor). :)
